Fun Facts in Noosa:

1. Did you know that the name Noosa came from the Aboriginal word “Noothera” or “Gnuthera” from the Kabi Kabi Language, meaning “shadow” or “shade”. This is believed to be in reference to the tall forests in the area that offered shade from the sun for the local aboriginal people.
2. There were several Aboriginal groups that inhabited the Noosa area. The main ones were the Undumbi tribe to the South, The Dulingbara to the north and the Kabi Kabi (or Gabi Gabi) to the West.
3. The Noosa hinterland was formed during the Oligocene era about 25-30 million years ago from volcanic activity which created the ranges causing changes in sea level beginning the shaping of our beaches and waterways.
4. First reports of the area were from around May 1770 when Captain Cook sailed past but early settlement did not begin until almost a century later.
5. The first settlements in the area were in Tewantin which was mostly driven by the timber and gold industry.
6. Noosa was created as its own separate shire in 1910 with an initial population of 2,000 people under the Local Authorities Act 1902.
7. Noosa is home to one of only two everglade systems on Earth. The Noosa everglades are a unique ecosystem of pristine water stretching 60kms, home to a magnificent amount of flora and fauna.
8. The Noosa River starts in the Como Escarpment near Mount Elliot, winding its way south the the lakes surrounding Tewantin until it enters the Coral Sea between Noosa Heads and Noosa North Shore.
9. Long before Noosa gained fame as a tourist destination for european settlers it was host to numerous tribes that would travel from all over Queensland and as far as Northern NSW to visit the area and celebrate its abundance.
10. Once Noosa Sound was built in the 1970s the property market boomed. Noosa Heads become more fashionable and the rest as they say is history.
